How to Care for Constipation Naturally

Constipation is a common issue affecting about 30% of children, and it tends to be worse in the preschool and toddler years. However, constipation is not something kids neccessarily grow out of. Instead, they grow into other digestive issues later in life.

If you’ve already tried prebiotics, probiotics, prune juice, pureed prunes, and other natural remedies to no avail, this is for you. Even if you’ve resorted to over-the-counter or prescription medication like Miralax (which often comes with side effects like behavior issues and meltdowns), and you’re still searching for a natural drug-free option- this is for you.

As a neurologically focused pediatric chiropractor, I want to share with you the number one missing link found in more than 80% of kids with constipation who come to our clinic. Please share this with other parents who may be struggling with constipation in their kids, as the information we’ll discuss could help their little ones as well.

The Root Causes of Constipation

In our clinic, we don’t just treat the symptoms and throw medications at a condition like a traditional pediatrician would. Instead, we get to the root cause and work closely with the nervous system. Constipation may seem like a gut issue related to diet and nutrition, and if you’ve tried all the nutritional changes, supplements, and probiotics- you’re amazing and moving in the right direction to make digestion easier for your kiddo!!  But if your child is still struggling with constipation, that’s where neurology and science come into play.

Through a real-life case study, I’ll explain how neurologically focused chiropractic adjustments can help alleviate constipation in children. The natural and drug-free approach we use focuses on the nervous system to get to the root of the problem, rather than just treating the symptoms.

Constipation, like most challenges in children, is rarely caused by one thing. In fact, there’s usually a multitude of stressors that go into the child’s nervous system and body early on in life. This can include stress during pregnancy, interventions during delivery such as C-section, forceps, or vacuum, and exposure to toxins in the environment. This assortment of stress can cause the nervous system, or the neuro-digestive system, to slow down and become constipated. So if you’ve struggled to find the exact cause of your child’s constipation, the answer is usually a combination of factors.

Stress on the Nervous System Affects Digestive Motility

Even though the majority of patients try to address constipation through nutrition and supplements, the root causes often come from stress on the nervous system. In chiropractic care, this stress is called subluxation, which means stress stuck on. The sympathetic fight or flight side of the nervous system is what we call the gas pedal. When it gets stuck on, it can cause a variety of issues, including constipation, ADHD, anxiety, and sensory issues. In fact, many patients who struggle with these issues later in life also had constipation when they were children.

When the nervous system is stressed out, it steals energy from the gut. This can cause digestive motility to slow down, leading to what we call neurogenic constipation. Four out of five cases of constipation that we see in our clinic are neurogenic, which means they are caused by stress on the nervous system. We can usually determine this by looking back at the child’s case history, seeing if the family has tried everything else, and measuring the stress, or subluxation, on the nervous system using our INSiGHT scans.

Juniper’s Story of Hope

One example of how chiropractic care can help with constipation is the case of a little baby named Juniper. At just five or six months old, Juniper was going days without pooping, and her rock star mom had tried everything, from probiotics to changes in diet. But after seeking chiropractic care, Juniper’s constipation improved significantly.

I’m going to dive into Juniper’s first neurothermal scan, which is a piece of technology we use in our offices to measure stress on the nervous system. The neurothermal scan allows us to do two things: quantify stress and locate stress. It helps us identify subluxations, or misalignments, in the spine. We conducted Juniper’s first neurothermal scan, and found two significant subluxations in her neuro spinal system. One was at the very top of her spine, the brain stem or upper cervical area (C1-C2, Atlas and Axis), and the other was in the middle, at T5-T6.

When the upper cervical area is subluxated and stressed out, the nerve that is most affected is called the vagus nerve. This nerve is known as the “rest and digest” nerve, which is crucial for proper digestion. It starts in the cervical spine, goes all the way down to the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and diaphragm, and slows our heart rate while improving our breathing. In Juniper’s case, her constipation was caused by subluxations in the upper area that were blocking the vagus nerve’s proper function.

The second subluxation was in the mid-neuro gastric, stomach area. This area was responsible for getting food digested and into the top one-third and two-thirds of her neuro gastric system. If the food cannot be broken down in steps one and two, it cannot be eliminated in step three, which is how digestive motility works. This is why Juniper was having difficulty with constipation.

Even though this did not show up in Juniper’s scan specifically, it is not uncommon for kids with constipation to have significant subluxations down around the sacrum. The sacrum houses another plexus of what’s called parasympathetic, or “rest and digest,” nerves. Many kids we see in our clinic not only have the same upper to middle subluxations that Juniper had, but they also have lower subluxations.

Chiropractic care does not aim to treat or cure constipation. Rather, our focus is on taking care of the nervous system by removing stress and subluxation through gentle and easy Neuro-Tonal adjustments. By doing so, we aim to relax the Nervous System and improve the tone and coordination of the neuromuscular system as a whole, which is essential in cases of neurogenic constipation – the most common type of constipation.

While there are various factors that contribute to constipation, such as poor nutrition and excessive toxins, many families are making positive changes in these areas by incorporating good foods and supplements while limiting or eliminating toxins. However, as has been mentioned, even with a healthy diet and lifestyle, subluxation can still occur during pregnancy, delivery, and early stages of life, making it crucial to seek out neurologically-focused, pediatric chiropractic care. If you aren’t local to our office, we have a network of trained and ready chiropractors in our PX Docs Network that can address this missing link and ensure optimal nervous system function.

To learn more about how to take care of constipation naturally, please read this article. We encourage you to share this information with other moms and families to reach more people who may benefit from this knowledge. If you’re ready to explore pediatric chiropractic care and the role of subluxation in digestive motility, please reach out to us to schedule a consultation or to find your local PX Doc, visit our directory. We can provide customized adjustments that are personalized to your child’s specific needs, which can lead to better gut health, improved immune system, sleep, and motor tone.

We want to help families find answers to their constipation concerns before turning to heavy medications with potentially harmful side effects. As always, we are here for you to provide hope, answers, and help in any way we can.

Harvey Lillard and the Birth of Chiropractic

This month, chiropractic turns 125 years old! The story of D.D. Palmer delivering the first ever chiropractic adjustment is documented in his book “The Chiropractor’s Adjuster” published in 1910. The recipient of that first adjustment was a man named Harvey Lillard, a janitor who cleaned the building where D.D. Palmer’s office was located on the fourth floor. Harvey Lillard suffered from hearing loss after an incident 17 years prior when he was in a cramped, stooping position and felt something pop in his spine. He immediately noticed the hearing loss and sought out the advice of many doctors over the years. None of these doctors were able to help him and he eventually gave up on ever hearing normally again.

D.D. Palmer was intrigued by his case and worked to convince Harvey Lillard to allow him to perform a chiropractic adjustment on him. Harvey agreed. The adjustment D.D. Palmer delivered restored Harvey’s hearing and just so happened to be the first ever adjustment performed in the field of chiropractic. The date widely accepted for this incident is September 18, 1895. This is why we celebrate the birth of chiropractic on the 18th of September every year.

If you think the story sounds a little far-fetched, Harvey Lillard was interviewed directly about the incident and himself confirmed that D.D. Palmer delivered two adjustments to him and at this interview 8 months later, he was still hearing quite well. In fact, several chiropractors and researchers have gone on to help with hearing loss in a number of documented patients over the years. It’s important to note that there are several causes for hearing loss and not all causes can be helped by chiropractic. The types of hearing loss caused by a misalignment of the spine are collectively called vertebrogenic hearing disorders. Vertebrogenic hearing disorders can be greatly improved by chiropractic adjustments, just as in the case of Harvey Lillard.

Now you know the story behind the birth of chiropractic. All that’s left to say is… Happy 125th Birthday, Chiropractic!

COVID-19 chaos and how impACT Chiropractic can help!

Hey Friends,
There’s so much information coming at us about COVID-19 and it can be scary. We know that the best thing to do right now is to make sure we’re all taking great care of each other and ourselves. Most importantly, taking care of our immune systems so that if you do come into contact with the virus, your body can fight it quickly!

Here’s a quick list of things you can do to boost your immunity:

GET ADJUSTED! ? We will continue business as usual over the coming weeks because we know how important a strong immune system is to fight ANY virus your body comes in contact with – an adjustment alone can boost your immune response by 200%! Now is when your body needs chiropractic care more than ever. We want you to know we’re taking extra precautions at impACT Chiropractic to keep you safe.

1. We are consistently wiping down all surfaces within impACT Chiropractic with disinfectant.
2. We have removed all the toys that are not easily wiped down or sanitized ? and will bring them back out once the threat is over. We apologize ahead of time if your kiddo’s favorite toy is missing when they come in. ☹️
3. All surfaces and tables are cleaned consistently and we will provide organic wipes ? throughout the office if you feel more comfortable doing so yourself.
4. If you call ahead to let us know you’re feeling ill, ??? we’ll move your adjustment to one of our private rooms or outside of normal office hours. Our private adjusting and screening rooms will be cleaned down thoroughly after each client.
5. We have spread out our schedule as much as possible to keep the waiting room as clear or free of people as we can. Come in, get your immune boost, and head home! ?

During this time, let’s all do our part to combat what we can control and keep using chiropractic to strengthen your immune system. There is no better time than now to make sure your body has the ability to adapt and respond to any virus or exposure out there.

FEED your body the good stuff! ??? More produce, less processed and sugary foods. Also, cut way back on mucous-inducing dairy.

MOVE your body! ?‍♀️ ?️‍♂️ Even if your workouts are relocated from the gym to your home, movement relieves stress and boosts your immune system! Make sure to break a sweat because that is how our body gets things moving on out!

SUPPLEMENT your system! Please see Kasey Bordas in our office with your supplement questions and needs. She’s our resident nutrition and functional medicine expert. We also carry elderberry syrup from Alex’s Elderberries and local natural honey from Carolina Shores Apiaries in our office, so pick some up when you stop by! (Honey is cash only.)

MANAGE your stress! ??? In scary times like this, stress levels can skyrocket. Stress is known to cause 90% of all illness and dramatically decreases our ability to FIGHT. Try your best to find peace and calm in each day. Meditate (ask us for recommendations), limit social media, love on your people, and stay calm. ?‍♀️?‍♂️

REST! Get plenty of restful sleep. ? Your immune system requires large amounts of energy and depends on adequate sleep to function at full capacity.

And of course, WASH YOUR HANDS often and thoroughly. ?

We’re in this together and we’re here for you.

On her way to better health! Meet Dolores!

Before starting care at impACT Chiropractic, Dolores was experiencing a number of symptoms that left her feeling off and drained of energy. She suffered from daily headaches and a stiff neck that limited her mobility. She lived with constant neck and shoulder pain and severe pain in the lumbar region of her back that would radiate to her legs and hips. Dolores suffers from GERD and was on three Zantac per day and still experienced breakthrough reflux. Dolores was also concerned about a loss of feeling in the entire top of her left foot.

In the six months Dolores has been under chiropractic care, she’s had a number of great improvements so far. Her neck is no longer stiff and she’s regained her mobility there. Her headaches are gone except for an occasional sinus headache. The pain in her shoulder is gone and the pain in her neck is only occasional. She’s experienced a vast improvement in the pain in her lumbar region, which is now just occasional and only radiates a bit to her right hip. Her posture has improved and she has much more energy and an enhanced feeling of well-being. While she still deals with GERD, she’s down to two Zantac per day and no longer has breakthrough reflux. She’s even regaining sensation in her left foot.

While her care is an on-going process, we could not be more thrilled about the improvements Dolores has experienced so far. It’s an honor for us to be on this journey with her to resolve her pain and improve her overall health.

24 Years of Migraines GONE for this Mom! Meet Gina!

As a lifelong sufferer of migraine headaches, I started chiropractic care 24 years ago as an alternative to other types of treatment such as pain meds or Botox injections. My family and I believe in living a natural lifestyle, eating clean, being active and avoiding unnecessary toxins. After I had been in chiropractic care (with a different chiropractor) for many years, something changed about three years ago. I began to experience migraines every 24 to 48 hours. With the simplest activity or smallest movement, my cervical vertebrae would come out of alignment.

In order to correct my cervical issues, a specialist recommended a spinal fusion surgery which would immobilize my head and neck. This fusion would forever alter my physical abilities, even preventing me from being able to nod my head. As a homeschooling mom, business owner and head of an active family, I knew that spinal fusion surgery was NOT a road I wanted to go down. I also believe in chiropractic care and wanted to continue with a healthier, non-invasive alternative.

My chiropractor at the time tried several types of adjustments, therapies and other treatments. The last treatment was being fitted with a cervical collar. I was advised to wear the collar four to six hours every day. And whenever I felt the stirrings of a migraine begin, I was to put the collar on to help hold things in place. Even with this, I still experienced migraines every 24 to 48 hours. Something as simple as sneezing, turning my head or lifting my arms would trigger a migraine. With this, I began to limit and eventually eliminate activities that I loved. I missed out on tennis, bowling, bike riding, rollerblading and even just playing outside with my kids. For two and a half years, I was stuck in this anxiety-inducing cycle of migraine headaches. I wasn’t able to be that fun, active mom anymore and I struggled to maintain as much of a “normal life” as possible for my family.

About six months ago, I ran into Dr. Turner during a career day at a local elementary school. We’re both Conway natives and being I graduated high school with his older brother, we recognized each other immediately.  As we began to catch up, I shared my history of migraines and how they were impacting not just my life but my family as well. He told me that often times, approaching a situation like mine with a different set of eyes and a different set of hands can provide different results. I decided to see if his eyes and hands could help. Within a month and a half of being under Dr. Turner’s care, the constant cycle of migraines that occurred every 24 to 48 hours lessened. And now, I’ve gone 4 months without a migraine!

Dr. Turner has literally given me back my life. That might sound extreme but he has made such a difference. With his help, I can now be that active mom again, pain free, fully engaged in my dog training business and in my family’s life. Reconnecting with Dr. Turner has been a blessing and a gift all in itself. I am looking forward to reintroducing activities that I love and continuing to live an active lifestyle right alongside my family. I am so grateful that this can be a reality for me and many others with the wonderful care that Dr. Turner and his staff provide (including Baxter, who is an excellent office dog and stress-reliever). Thank you for all that you do!!!

Forever THANKFUL,

Gina C.
